Why What You Do When No One Is Looking Matters

One of the unique challenges of the wastewater industry is that all of the biggest work is happening below the surface.  No one notices, and that’s good!

When pumps are running, lift stations are operating, and wastewater is moving where it needs to go, nobody thinks much about the systems making it happen. Unlike roads, buildings, or bridges, wastewater infrastructure is largely hidden from public view.

In many ways, that’s exactly what we want.

The problem is that invisibility can sometimes create a false sense of security.

When equipment is performing reliably, and complaints are few, it becomes easy to believe that what worked yesterday will continue working tomorrow. If the pumps are running and the calls have stopped coming in, why change anything?

Pump manufacturers in the wastewater industry might grow complacent.  After all, if no one is complaining, then what’s the problem?  That’s a trap!


Today’s Wastewater Is Different Than Yesterday’s

The wastewater stream moving through municipal systems today is not the same wastewater stream municipalities dealt with twenty, thirty, or fifty years ago.

Materials marketed as “flushable” have introduced challenges that previous generations never anticipated. Population growth has increased demand in many communities. Aging infrastructure is being asked to do more, while many operators are being asked to maintain those systems with fewer resources and tighter budgets.

At first glance, everything may appear to be working. But beneath the surface, the environment surrounding those systems continues to evolve.

That’s why “good enough” can become a costly strategy. The equipment that solved yesterday’s challenges may not be equipped to handle tomorrow’s.  And if the pump manufacturer isn’t on top of the issue before it becomes an issue, the distributor and the end user are left holding the bag.


Innovation Isn’t About Fixing Failure

One of the biggest misconceptions about innovation is that it only happens after something breaks.  “Fix it next time” is not a proactive solution.  The best innovations happen long before failure occurs.

They happen when manufacturers, engineers, and operators recognize emerging challenges and begin solving them before they become widespread problems.

For more than fifty years, Keen Pump has operated with that mindset.

When the company introduced its single-stage grinder pump cutting technology in the 1970s, the goal was to create a more effective and reliable solution for handling difficult wastewater applications.  There were other pumps on the market.  Keen’s goal was not to build another option.  It was to build THE option.  And we did.

As the industry evolved, new challenges emerged. Materials entering wastewater systems have changed. Maintenance demands increased. Operators needed equipment that could handle tougher conditions while minimizing downtime.

Rather than accepting those challenges as unavoidable, Keen continued to innovate. Technologies like the Pulverizer system were developed specifically to address increasingly difficult solids and debris that traditional systems were never originally designed to process.

We got in front of a situation that was just beginning to rear its ugly head.  The Pulverizer Pump is leading the way in situations where pumps used to clog up and break down due to materials that were not meant for yesterday’s wastewater pump solutions.  


The Industry Cannot Afford to Stand Still

Perhaps more than most industries, wastewater depends on continuous improvement.  The public rarely sees the challenges. They simply expect the system to work.

That expectation creates a responsibility for everyone involved—from manufacturers and engineers to municipalities and operators—to constantly ask what comes next.

  • How are waste streams changing?
  • How can maintenance be simplified?
  • How can reliability be improved?
  • How can operators accomplish more with fewer resources?
  • How can aging infrastructure continue to meet modern demands?
  • How can our pump products become more powerful, move waste over longer spaces, solve upgrade issues without completely rebuilding wastewater systems?

These questions matter even when everything appears to be functioning normally.

In fact, that’s often the best time to ask them. Waiting for failure is never the most effective path to improvement.

Success Should Never Become Complacency

At Keen Pump, innovation has never been about chasing trends or creating buzz. It has always been about recognizing that the wastewater industry is constantly changing, whether most people notice it or not.

The greatest successes in wastewater are often invisible. Communities rarely see the problems that never occurred because equipment was improved, maintenance was simplified, or a better solution was developed before it became necessary.

That is the kind of innovation that has driven Keen Pump since 1973.
